Working with churches
The challenge
WVfC has a long history, having started in 1969. Even though we have a long relationship, there are still some historical designs and patterns that remain from previous work before I was the go to designer. The challenge is to try to hold on to styling and ideas that can be important in historical terms, but can need freshening up or updating – without compromising the past, or the message it contained.
My approach
The approach is to have a view of the long-term end destination, for the brand, style and system of message delivery. Having had a long relationship with WVfC, I am able to bring along elements from the past to align with new work.
While there is a temptation to use a “new brush sweeps clean” approach, that can be harmful to the ministry’s brand and internal view of itself. It can be disorienting. So the ideal is to introduce new styling and patterns, while using a combination of historical colouring, fonts and photos. This gives gravity and foundation to the new, without needlessly getting rid of things that are old, just in the name of style.
The outcome
Various designs over years that all aim for a cohesive body of materials that belong together – whether banners, leaflets, stationery, or information packs.
